He Shou Wu Root
He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum) is a tonic to the kidney and liver functions, toning up the vital essence and blood, fortifying the muscles, tendons and bones, and to prevent premature aging, maintaining the youthful condition and color of the hair, strengthening sperm and ova, fortifying the back and knees and as the premier longevity herb of Chinese tonic herbalism. Prepared Polygonum multiflorum is one of the most important and widely used Chinese tonic herbs. It shares the position as the primary essence tonic of Chinese herbalism with Lycium Fruit (Goji Berry) and Prepared Rehmannia Root.
He Shou Wu is tonic to the kidney and liver functions. It is a potent and surefire Yin essence tonic. As such it strengthens the tendons, ligaments and bones, and prevents premature aging. It reputedly has the capacity to return gray hair to its youthful color. This is one of its most popular attributes and He Shou Wu is used throughout Asia for this purpose.

Prepared Rehmannia Root
Prepared Rehmannia Root is said to be the “Kidney’s own food.” It is a fundamental Kidney tonic in Chinese tonic herbalism, and is considered to be a primary longevity herb. It is found in a great many common “anti-aging” formulations. It is considered rejuvenating and life lengthening.
Prepared Rehmannia Root is a fundamental Yin Jing tonic, providing Yin directly to the Kidney. It is quick and effective. Prepared Rehmannia Root is said to benefit sexual functions in men and women and is included in almost every formula that is designed to strengthen reproductive functions, including fertility. It forms the Yin base of many men’s potency formulas.
Prepared Rehmannia Root is a major blood tonic. This is of course of special importance to women, who always need to rebuild blood. Prepared Rehmannia Root, when combined with Dang Gui becomes an even more potent blood tonic. Dang Gui is Chinese herbalism's premier blood tonic.
Prepared Rehmannia Root is usually combined with at least one Qi tonic to improve its assimilation and effectiveness. In this formula, Eleuthero (Siberian Ginseng), a major Qi tonic, is used. Aged Citrus Peel, Red Jujube Date, Licorice Root are all Qi tonics that have the special purpose of helping to regulate Qi and improve digestion and assimilation of the main herbs in this formula. He Shou Wu and, to an even greater degree, Prepared Rehmannia are very rich, so these three herbs are included to make the He Shou Wu and Prepared Rehmannia easily digestible.

Precautions: Mild gastrointestinal disturbance, characterized by soft stool, is the only side effect associated with Polygonum multiflorum. However, moderate doses of processed He Shou Wu rarely result in such an effect. Should this occur, the herb may be combined with certain other herbs, and the problem can be eliminated. Consult your herbalist. Again, this side effect is rare.
